Re: 1:25 scale 1st prints
am I to understand that these were done with a 3d printer, or am I missing something here? i'm considering buying one next year, but will wait and see.

Re: 1:25 scale 1st prints
oh snap, that's awesome, this could mean the death of resin casting, getting a more accurate scale model, no offense intended to those resin builders out there, but printing a 3d model that is accurately made, could rebirth the whole model building hobby. was this one done in a desktop printer of a professional company?
Re: 1:25 scale 1st prints
Sounds like a good time to be getting into the 3D modelling game!
Re: 1:25 scale 1st prints
I've been doing it off and on for around 15 years, not scratch, but have done a lot of conversion work, have learned quite a bit a long the way, I can look at a model and see if it's any good or not, or if it needs major body work to be useful. this will help me when i'm going into 3d printing for my kits next year.
Re: 1:25 scale 1st prints
I use a mix of printers mate, I have my own FDM printer for some parts but the bodies get done by shapeways in a resin, keeps most of the details. for finer work like detailed rims and small bits, I get them done in frosted detail resin, it's harder to work with when sanding but is great for molding and casting once prepped.
KC and I sent the 1:25 HQ off to Kirk to see if he could cast it, it's too thin for casting.
Printed bodies are great in strong white (or coloured) and flexible resin but they can be a PITA to prep. they come with striations that do require prep work before paint to remove them. I have come up with a few tricks to make it easier for me.
The biggest thing I can tell you if you start doing your own bodies is do the windows on the model and seperate them, make them bucks and print those as well, that way you can make proper shaped windows and not just flat stuck in pieces of lexan. same for head/tail light lenses. makes a huge difference to the end result!
Flat windscreens

Shaped windscreens

Just look at the windscreen decals to see the difference

Re: 1:25 scale 1st prints
right ok,l yeah I can see a huge difference in the window decals, I am preparing to save to move in 2017 so I wouldn't be buying one much before this time next y ear, if funds allow I might even get a new pc, as this one is getting pretty old now, I've had it for 4 years, and it doesn't run as well as it used to. (I mean the pc not me muahah).
I bought the xb hq ht monaro from partsbox, and they're pretty rough, so it's my plan to buy a 3d model in 2017-2018 and do a proper one. of course that's a long way down the track from now. but if it looks half as good as what you have done here, it's going to look amazing.
edit/ I just visited shapeways and the largest they have is 1/35 do they do 1/25?

I have my 1:25 bodies listed hereozmods wrote:I just visited shapeways and the largest they have is 1/35 do they do 1/25?

MIWI bought 1 of each but we haven't seen him on here since, to find out whathe thinks.
I have the FG and VE on my desk at home... the VE was meant to go to KC and the FG to bear but I have been slack in making the windows and lenses, so they haven't left my hands yet.
I will do the Excel in 1:25 as well... the Hoonicorn is also in 1:25 but I am waiting for the first print to arrive and check it before i list that.

Kirk does some good resin bodies, Waaaaaay better than theshitbox. and they are to proper scale too, not copies of copies of copies that have shurnk in size.ozmods wrote:right ok,l yeah I can see a huge difference in the window decals, I am preparing to save to move in 2017 so I wouldn't be buying one much before this time next y ear, if funds allow I might even get a new pc, as this one is getting pretty old now, I've had it for 4 years, and it doesn't run as well as it used to.
