BMF or Bare-Metal Foil

Post by sandboarder »

OK so first of all you want the new improved BMF as its stickier and a better product. The black, gold, copper etc aren't as good.

First of all you want a really clean molded kit or use Luke's clean up tips here http://www.kustomvinyls.com/forum/phpBB ... ?f=26&t=94 to make it easier on yourself. My Monogram issue Nomad is bad and i'm paying for it here.

So cut the BMF to size, im always generous seeing as its readily available for about $12 a sheet online. Gently rub with a cotton tip until its smooth and your happy. Then DRAG a tooth pick over the grooves to help push it in tight. NEVER push the tooth pick as you'll tear the BMF. Then using a new blade cut the excess of and try to only cut the foil and not into the paint (This is where a new blade helps)

Here's some pictures

and before you know it your transforming the model into something else. I still have heaps to BMF on this.

other hints n tips welcome :D

Cotton tip and a Toothpick, two very important and inexpensive tools which make all the difference thumbsup

Oh, and a ton of patience yes!

Mad tutorial man, BMF was a mystery to me until about a month ago, it's tricky as heck! I'd be rather interested where you're getting it for $12 a sheet! I stupidly paid like $25 for a sheet from a HobbyOne store a few years ago. D'oh!

I was paying around $20 a sheet and going from hobby shop to hobby shop searching for it to be in stock. Now I buy mine from BNA and can get a email reminder when it's back in stock. They usually have it in stock tho :D

Holy crap I never knew BNA carried it, thanks! I can use it generously to avoid overlapping edges now, woo! I'll have to get a paintjob done and go nuts, cheers.

Makes sure it's always flat too!!! When it bends or curls up it shifts on the backing paper and isn't the same
